Everyone feels overwhelmed at the
thought of purchasing a new or used vehicle. You know, sitting for
hours and hours negotiating a price with a sales person. Today’s consumer
need not fear! It could happen that you are spending time on that
“right price”, however, if you go into your car shopping experience
well prepared, you can eliminate wasted time in the office and on
the lot of many dealerships. Here are some tips to help you next time
you are "on the lot".
Have an idea of what you are looking for:
Are you looking for a new or used vehicle? What is your price range?
If you are planning on hauling the kids’ soccer team, don’t go to
look at a 2 door sports car! Consider your possibilities. Are you
taking into consideration the practical nature of the vehicle? Do
you travel a lot? Are you looking for comfort and features or just
a car to get you around? These are important questions to have answered
before you step foot onto a car lot.
What are your financial needs for your purchase:
Do you need financing? Do you need special financing such as help
with a down payment, bad credit, no credit or a trade? Sometimes it
can be better to unload the vehicle you currently own before purchasing
and use the money towards your down payment. Are you buying for a
student? Have you considered your insurance costs? What payment can
you afford? Do you need to lease a vehicle? Do you belong to a credit
union that is willing to consider you for a loan? Does your bank have
a good track record of considering auto loans?
Go shopping at the right time of day:
This one may be something most people don’t think about. Hurrying
home from the office and picking up the family to run to the nearest
dealership a half hour before they close is not going to make for
a good experience for anyone. If it is possible, find some time during
the day to shop. A weekend day with no kids to distract is the best.
Although it isn’t always possible to avoid, it can ease the stress
and urgency of a purchase if you have the freedom to look and drive
without Junior pulling his sister’s hair.
Don’t be afraid of: The salesperson!
Believe it or not, they are providing a service to you. Of course
they would like you to buy from them, but they are there to
help you. Sales people can answer questions and guide you into your
purchase. Feel free to request to take a used vehicle to your own
mechanic if you are unsure about it. Remember that when you purchase
a used vehicle, it is not going to be perfect! Consider whether a
spot on the carpet or a mark on the door is really a reason to turn
down an otherwise great car at the right price!
Consider these things the next time you go car shopping. It will help
make you a better consumer and help you feel better about your buying
experience. It doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Relax, make a list
and have fun finding the vehicle you need! |
